Germany are coming off a really pathetic effort in the 2018 World Cup, where they were humiliated. The former World Champions were looking to make a deep run in the competition, and why not win back-to-back titles.
However, their dreams quickly evaporated. They lost to Mexico in the opening match, but defeated Sweden in the next one. However, a tough loss to South Korea in the final match left them eliminated at the group stage.
Coach Lowe has called up almost the same team that played in the World Cup, but with a few important additions. Up-and-coming Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen is a solid midfielder, while Nico Schulz (Hoffenheim) and Thilo Kehrer (PSG) are also very promising. Coach Low also recalled Leroy Sane (Manchester City), Jonathan Tah (Leverkusen) and Nils Petersen (Freiburg).

The two teams have met on five occasions in competitive matches, and results have been pretty balanced (2-2-1). However, France have been much better in all matches, friendlies included, and have the upper hand (6-3-3). Oddly enough, Germany have never defeated France as hosts over the years (0-3-2).
Both teams will be looking to top this group, as it could lead to a ticket to the EURO Cup final stage. There is a long way to go until that happens, and whatever happens in this tournament is not final. It will be interesting to see how this new format will play out.
